Special Assignment

A Little LUV

I am sitting on the plane today waiting to get in the air headed to Dallas and then on to OKC and I thought I would write a bit about my last trip home a week ago. I flew on Southwest both ways through Pheonix and really had a good trip – at least in the air. The leg room on LUV (Southwest) is actually really good and surprised me a lot. Since they changed the cattle herd boarding, it’s actually really a pleasant experience. So my travel was okay…

My weekend was a different story. Desirae threw up first on Saturday afternoon; I started puking at 2:00am; Donielle, 2 miles away, got sick around 4:00am and actually had to go to the emergency room. She was fine, but had a few bags of fluids run into her. Lindel for sick next. I pushed my flight back from Sunday to Monday and didn’t really start feeling good until Wednesday. It was not a great weekend. That’s enough of that. Maybe you will get a post in the next few days from an actual computer instead of from my iPhone!

Starboard Engine

Do you think it is a bad thing when the pilot tells you that the right engine is not starting and he thinks it would be best if you got off the plane for a while and got back on later tonight? That is exactly what happened to me tonight in Dallas on way to Burbank. I am still standing in the terminal at DFW waiting to see if we are going to fly tonight or sleep on these uncomfortable chairs at gate A13. Obviously I am hoping for the former! No fun star sighting tonight… Just this awesome wait to hear our destiny! We were supposed to get back on the plane 10 minutes ago, but here I stand. Here’s hoping that I make it to LA tonight! On a bright note, I did get upgraded to first class and have already ordered the ravioli – if we ever get to fly!

The weekend at home with the girls was great. My parents came into Edmond Friday night and Saturday I got wet in Stillwater at the game! Today I have been cleaning the garage up and mowed the yard at the new house for the first time. How depressing! After having the Bluegrass in Wentzville manicured and fed like an award winning lawn – this Weed infested Bermuda looks disgusting right now. It will only take a few years but I have my work cut out for me! We got the house looking OK for me only being home for a few days since we moved in. Des is a real trooper with all my traveling and is doing a pretty amazing job of being a single parent when I am gone. Thank you to Auntie D and Nana for helping out so much. We really appreciate it.

Well, it’s coming up on 9pm here in Dallas… Still no engine…

UPDATE: 9:45pm in Dallas. We just got a new plane and I am at least sitting in my seat now. A few jerks used up all the overhead space in first class and I had to put my bag back in row 8 in coach!! We might actually leave here in 20 minutes or so!

In-N-Out Goodness

Enough said…

Another “star” Sighting

You might recognize this guy from the CBS show “The Unit” – he is on the plane with me. I will try and get a picture of my own later. Just thought I would share…

UPDATE: His name is Max Martini. He was with his wife and kids and I did not bother them. I did try to take a picture buy it turned out horrible. It was most definitly him though. I rock.

The Sky is the Limit

Sky from the back. Nice...Friday afternoon after work I drove down to Burbank and exchanged my Dodge Charger for a different car. Something was beating against the bottom of the Charger as I drove it, so I thought I would get a new car. I asked the desk clerk if they had any “cool” cars, like the Sky or Solstice they advertised; he called the “back lot” and had one brought up to me! No extra chrage… free upgrade! Thank you AVIS First! Its a fun car to drive. This 2008 Saturn Sky has 1 2.4L I4 with only about 177 HP, buts its so small and light that its pretty peppy. It is a little tight fit for me, but I can tolerate it for a sports car convertible that looks as good as this car does. It turns heads. Lots of heads. Had a few people ask about it even! For a Saturn, its pretty great!

I put the top down today and drive down to Hollywood, then down Sunset Blvd to Rodeo Drive; Rodeo to Wilshire Blvd, back thru the Rodeo Drive shops (think Pretty Woman) and back onto Sunset Blvd through Beverly Hills. Sunset runs into the US 1 and I took the PCH through Malibu to Pt Mugu, where I hopped on the 101 in Ventura. The 101 took me to Santa Barbara, where I drove down State Street to see all the shops and local fare… its a really neat area, I parked the car and hit the streets to buy a beach towel and grab some dinner. I ate a really nice Italian place on State Street there and then walked back the car and drove to Butterfly Beach. There were 2 weddings taking place right there on the beach… I walked the beach a bit, got in the water for a second – man its cold!! -  and watched the sun set beachside. It was a nice day with a LOT of driving. Its was a fun day. Maybe tomorrow I will just veg in the room… by the way – its worth noting that all the pictures I took today were taken with my iPhone! Not spectacular images, but pretty good for a phone.

Good Travels

I am sitting in the Burbank airport waiting for the first flight of my trip home to OKC for the weekend. It seems like of has been a long time since I have seen my girls, but it’s only been two weeks. This hotel life that I getting accustomed to is not for me – I miss my wife and kids… We are getting through it, bit it’s not easy by any means.

I got to the airport faster than usual this week for some reason; I didn’t do anything different than normal that I can tell. I really hope AA upgrades me to first class week, I am exhausted. Too bad I am not Platinum – those guys get upgraded all the time! I am first class from DFW to OKC, bit that is a short a flight and it really doesn’t matter on something that short. I be home soon. Looking forward to it!

Posted from my iPhone.

Butterfly Beach

Today I am at Butterfly Beach in Monticeto – near Santa Barbara. This beach is known to be one of the regular spots to see celebrities at the beach. The infamous Four Seasons Biltmore is right on the beach and is apparently where the stars go to get away from the hussle and bussle of LA.

I think I just saw Alyssa Milano, but she had a big sun hat on and it was hard to see her face.

Back to it… Today I am touring the Santa Barbara coast and it’s really nice here! I can see why Oprah just built her new mansion here. I can not tell you how nice it is to be able to drive an hour or so and be in 75 degree weather on the beach. Too bad housing out here in SoCal is so outrageous!

So, I just thought I would sit by the beach and take my first swim in the cold waters of the Pacific. Listening to my iPhone and – yes, posting to the website from my iPhone! The picture below was taken on my phone too! I love technology.

Is that… Jessica Simpson?!

I was upgraded to First Class once again this afternoon – thank you AAdvatage Gold! – and was sitting boarding the plane like always. I looked over my shoulder at a woman that caught my eye as I waited for the ticket agent and thought to myself – “that girl looks familiar” and didn’t think anything else of it. After everyone was on board the plane and I had settled into my comfy, roomy (by aircraft standards) seat, a little girl about 12 or 13 years old came up to the girl I had thought looked familiar earlier and asked her for an autograph. The little girl was holding a book, so I thought maybe the woman was an author or something. I was curious, but still didn’t really bother myself too much to find out who it was… I mean, come on, we were flying out of Burbank – not LAX. Well, after we got in the air, the woman got up to go to the bathroom, and on her way back I looked up briefly, then away, then quickly back to her and thought to myself… “Is that Jessica Simpson!!?!” Yes, it was Jessica Simpson. Wow! That is pretty exciting, how often are you sitting on a plane one row behind Jessica Simpson. Well, after that several people from Coach starting coming up to get her autograph and the flight attentents starting banning people from coming up there; they even had the Captain turn on the fasten seat belt light for the remainder of the flight! Well, to make a long story short – I did not bother her for her autograph because she was obviusly trying to keep it low key – remember, Burbank! She was very gracious when people asked for her autograph and really seemed to be genuinely nice. I should have just got her autograph, but I really was trying to let her be a private person… maybe I should have – yeah, I should have!

Touring LA: Pacific Coast Highway

Yesterday I spent the day being a tourist; besides, I don’t really live here anyway! I visited Blackbird Museum to start the day and then headed down to Santa Monica by way of the Pacfic Coast Highway. It was a good day…

DSC00044Blackbird Museum: The Blackbird Museum in Palmdale, CA is located on Avenue P at the main entrance to Air Force Plant 42. It is just a little trailer in a parking lot that has some historical aircraft sitting in front of it. There is a U-2D Dragonfly, a noted CIA spy plane built by DSC00045Lockheed Martin back in the day. It used to fly high altitude recon missions 11 miles or so above the earth. In 1960, a U-2 was shot down by the Soviets and 2 years later the pilot was traded back to the US in exchange for a Soviet spy… interesting story — look it up! There is also an A-12, which is the prototype and CIA version of the SR-71 Blackbird. DSC00043The SR-71 is a fantastic looking airplane. It flys above Mach 3 – yeah, that 3 times the speed of sound… at an altitude of like 80,000 ft or something rediculous like that. It was neat to get up close to these planes, shown in this photo. The SR-71 is said to be the first aircraft designed with an kind of thought towards making a platform stealthy. There is not a lot of steathly characteristics, but there are some there, and its was neat to see those ginormous (its my word, which makes it a word!) engines in person. DSC00053The other plane sitting in the gravel, was a F-117A Nighthawk; actually it was the first flight article for the program! There were many features of this aircraft that were modifed from its original configuration… most notably, there was absolutly no exhaust system! Anyway, its a also neat to get up close to this technological miracle. Its is absolutly amazing that it can even fly! There are lots of pictures in the gallery… The other picture here is of some trees I saw in Palmdale — I wonder if the wind ever blows here! Keep in mind that the wind was not blowing when I took the pictures!

Pacific Coast Highway: The PCH, as the locals call it, is a highway that runs along the west coast. On one side of the road is the Pacific Ocean, and the other is mountains. At times you basically driving along the side of a cliff or bluff with the ocean below you. It it a beautiful drive to say the least. I know my pictures don’t do it justice, but I am trying! I drove out to Point Mugu Naval Station (also on the coast) to get on the PCH out west of LA, and drove down through Malibu to Santa Monica. Malibu is a nice little beach city, although not at all as glamorous as I thought it would be. There is beach all along the coast of Malibu, with public parking and the steets were lined with cars of people that were living “the life” at the beach. It was 100 degrees when I left Palmdale – when I started my drive on the PCH, just a little over an hour away, the temperature was only 70 degrees! Wow, I could get used this! …Santa Monica was only a few miles away from the edge of Malibu, and I parked there at the Santa Monica Pier and walked along the beach down to Venice Beach, and back to the Pier. It was a nice afternoon. My feet hurt today from all the walking, either barefoot in the sand, or in my sandels on the streets of Venice Beach. Venice Beach was a neat area, lots a shops and things. It reminded me of the downtown Cozumel area from our Honeymoon. Santa Monica Pier was neat. There is a rollercoaster and carousel and such with a little fishing area out at the end. There were people performing (read peddling) for money and some pretty strange characters out there too! I hope to go back sometime with Desirae, it would be a lot of fun with someone I love…

All in all a good day of tourism for me. Its not ideal to spend Father’s Day weekend alone… but, it was a good weekend nonetheless. I miss my kids, and my wife… I am counting the days until I am back in Oklahoma. Its not that this is a bad place, in fact, I really like it and under the right circumstances could easily live here… its just not where my family is.

Palmdale

Well, I know we have been lax in updating you on our lives; let’s blame Desirae! We have been so busy! In the last 2 weeks Desirae started working from home (in OKC) for Emerson – that is a blessing, let me tell you… and I have started a new job 1500 miles away from my girls! Well, things are starting to settle down I think. This is my first weekend in SoCal without taking a plane ride back to OK, so I have planned a few touristic things to do. I will talk about this is a bit, but first: an update.

Desirae and the girls are doing well. I don’t get to talk to all of them as much as would like, but I try to keep myself busy so that I don’t think about being away for so long. It is not easy sometimes, but we will make it through just fine and become stronger from it; I am sure. Desirae likes her new role as a telecommuter, and it seems like her new boss is happy with it too! That is always a good thing! I really like my new job at Northrop Grumman, even though I really haven’t done any real work yet; that will come soon enough! There are alot of things that are similar to Boeing and alot of things that are different. So far I am having fun discovering what is what! I pretty much live at the Holiday Inn and making the best of it.

I can’t remember if we said this already or not… but, we are building a house in Edmond at Portland and Waterloo! Desirae and I basically drew the floor plan from scratch and its really exciting. We are in the pre-construction planning phase, and are getting our loan details hammered out right now – we hope to be pushing dirt by early July! Pictures and all kinds of fun times are ahead for this, so stay tuned! The builder is Brass Brick – they are really fun to work with and have excellent quality craftsmanship. I have been really impressed with everything they have done and the homes they build. You can visit their website at www.brassbrick.com. We are building in the Antler Ridge subdivision and have secured a 3/4 acre lot for our future home! We are so excited!!

DSC00018Now for Palmdale… today was my short work day – Every friday is a 4 hour day so I was out of the office by lunch. I decided to do head over to the Blackbird Museum to take some pictures of some planes they have sitting on the ground outside and check out the gift shop to add to my patch collection! They were not open, so I will have to do that tomorrow – apparently they are only open on the weekend. The City of Palmdale has a little Airpark right next to the Blackbirds where they have adopted several old and aging airframes and display them for people to see. I walked around the park and took pictures of the planes. There is an F-14 Tomcat out there, which I love by the way, so you should check out the pictures. Tomorrow I will post about the Blackbirds and Night Hawks. I have a little trip planned for tomorrow to go down to LA and do some sight seeing – if I survive the traffic you might even get to see the pictures and my recounting of the experience!
